Furfural synthesis in the presence of glucose

MSc student: Lisa van der Aa (SET/TNW)

Furfural, a possible future key platform chemical, is produced from xylose. Suitable biomass material than can be converted, first into xylose and then into furfural. Usually this biomass material contains not only C5-sugar chains (from which xylose is produced), but also C6-sugar chains, from which glucose is produced.

In this project kinetics are determined for the reactions to furfural, for the reactions from pure xylose and for the reactions from xylose in the presence of glucose. What are the differences for the kinetic parameters? And what does that imply?
