Indirect production of so-called solar fuels from excess sustainable energy: methane and DME

METHANE production

There be a source of CO2, there be electricity for water electrolysis, there be a sorbent for water absorption.

 

Goal: produce pure methane, i.e. gas grid quality, with the highest energy efficiency. The system should contain a separation enhanced methanation unit and should run continuously. Size: about 1 MW equivalent (LHV) of methane as a product. Provide an ASPEN PLUSTM based plant design that could operate in conjunction with e.g. a biomass based anaerobic digester (pig manure) or a biomass gasifier (wood, or energy crop based).

 

DME (dimethyl ether) production

There be a source of CO2, there be electricity for water electrolysis, there be a sorbent for water absorption.

 

Goal: produce pure DME via methanol and its dehydration with the highest energy efficiency. Alternatively, a one-step approach can be envisioned. The system should contain a separation enhanced reactor system and should run continuously. Size: about 10 MW equivalent of DME as a product. Provide an ASPEN PLUSTM based plant design that could run in conjunction with e.g. a cement production plant.
