JMBC course “Turbulence”

TU Delft, 9-12 May 2016

(registration closed)

·       Description

This course gives an introduction to the fundamentals of turbulence. It is aimed at PhD students and other researchers from the JM Burgerscentrum. Prerequisite knowledge of turbulence is not required, though may be helpful to keep up with the pace of the lectures. Basic knowledge of fluid mechanics is assumed. The first 2 days of the course are dedicated to classical turbulence theory such as can be found in the textbooks of S.B. Pope (Turbulent Flows), P.A. Davidson (Turbulence) and Tennekes & Lumley (A First Course in Turbulence), among others. It concerns the qualitative behavior, the statistical description, the underlying physics and the modelling of turbulence. During two plenary homework sessions a few assignments will be given and discussed in order to practice with theory. In the afternoon of day 2 an introduction will be given in turbulence modelling (CFD). The performance of several popular turbulence models will be demonstrated in a computer practical on day 4. Day 3 is dedicated to advanced numerical methods (DNS/LES) and experimental techniques (PIV/LDA) used in turbulence research. Guest lectures will be given by Prof. Hunt on recent developments in turbulence research (day 3), Prof. Lohse on turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection and Taylor-Couette flow (day 4) and Prof. Toschi on particles in turbulence (day 4).
