JMBC Contact group Turbulence

Description

The contactgroup "Turbulence" organizes annual meetings between researchers of the J.M.Burgerscentrum, active in the field of turbulence with the aim to strengthen contact between them and to exchange results and experience. PhD students and other researchers are given the opportunity to present their results in an informal setting that promotes discussion. Researchers that are not affiliated to the J.M. Burgerscentrum are also welcome to participate in our meetings.

If you want to be invited for our meetings, please send an email to Rene Pecnik (r.pecnik@tudelft.nl) or to Wim-Paul Breugem at (w.p.breugem@tudelft.nl)

Last meeting

Eindhoven University of Technology, April 5, 2019
On Friday April 5 2019 the JMBC contact group Turbulence met at Eindhoven University of Technology. With an attendance of about 30 persons and 9 speakers on the program it turned out to be an interesting day, with talks showing the breadth of topics that are under study and vivid discussions. I personally appreciated that we had a mixed audience of PhD students, postdocs and staff members from various universities. The day was closed with a lab visit and an informal get-together with drinks.

I want to thank the presenters and attendees for their participation! It has shown that these meetings are appreciated. It was a pleasure to host this meeting.

Our previous meetings

Delft, October 27, 2017
On Friday 27 October 2017 the JMBC Turbulence Contact Group held their annual contact day in Delft. With around 50 participants the attendance was overwhelming. The meeting was hosted by the Fluid Mechanics group. This time Prof. Willem van de Water, nowadays working at TU Delft, took care of the scientific program (see below) and acted as main chairman. The program started with an invited lecture by Prof. Bruno Eckhardt from the Philipps University of Marburg on coherent structures in turbulent Couette flow. After this inspiring talk there were 11 presentations by mostly PhD students from the RuG, UT, TU/e and TU Delft. Besides lunch and a tea break, there were a few 'contact moments', short breaks to promote informal discussion among the participants. At the end of the day a guided tour was held through the lab facilities of the Process & Energy department and the Fluid Mechanics group in particular. As always, the contact day was closed with a borrel, in the canteen of the Fluid Mechanics group. The organizers of the contact day were very satisfied about the scientific quality of the talks and the number of participants. It can be concluded that turbulence remains an important and active research theme within the fluid mechanics community in The Netherlands. The Turbulence Contact Day fulfils the clear need for a platform for researchers to meet and present their results to each other. Finally, after almost 10 years of duty, Wim-Paul Breugem will step back as the chairman of the Turbulence Contact Group. Rene Pecnik (TU Delft) will take over from him. We wish Rene the very best! The organization committee, Willem van de Water (TU Delft), Rene Pecnik (TU Delft) and Wim-Paul Breugem (TU Delft).
